MEGAPOCALYPSE 09 REPORT
The 28th of February 09 bought about the largest game ever in the History of Renmark. 10 Mad Keen gamers from Renmark and the surrounding community headed down to the Dice and Deck to play in an absolutely massive game of 40k Apocalypse.
The players were split into two teams; the forces of Good were to hold an Imperial City at all costs, the forces of Evil were to invade, slaughter and feed on all of the inhabitants.
At first glance it would seem that the forces of Good would have the upper hand. They had to defend a 12 x 4 stretch of City using the buildings as cover. The forces of Evil only had 4 ways into the city all of which would severely bottle neck their massive armies.
It seemed like it would be a cakewalk for the Good guys but it turned out to be anything but the truth. The city fell quickly and in no small part thanks to the Matchbox company….
I shall report on the fall of this city by focussing on each sector of the map and you can see for yourself what happened over two days of furious fighting, hilarity and Apocalyptic Explosions.
PART 1:
The Land Bridge
This natural bridge spanning ‘the Gap’ was located on the defenses far left side. The defenses were being coordinated largely by Stanley Grenfell and Scott Bowden who fielded amongst them: Baneblades, Leman Russes, Chimeras, Landraiders, Whirlwinds, and dozens of troops using the buildings and barricades to full effect.
Attacking the city on this end of the table was Kruger. His attacking force consisted of 3 Landraiders, 3 Vindicators (used in formation), 2 Rhinos, 3 Obliterators, Brass Scorpion and of course Matchboxes finest; a Warlord Titan. The transports contained Khorne Berserker's.
The battle commenced at 11:30am with the forces of Good laying down a devastating barrage of fire onto the Land Bridge. The only real casualties Chaos Suffered were the loss of the Brass Scorpion (to a great cheer from the Forces of Good who have reason to fear these monstrosities) and a few downed Void Shields on the Chaos Titan.
The Chaos Forces retaliated with a much greater effect destroying a Baneblade, Dozens of Guards, Marines and felling the Master of the Ravenwing.
The rest of the battle saw blows struck hard by both sides as the forces of Evil made there way across the dividing gap to eventually take that end of the city. The price was paid to take it though as only a fraction of the forces were left from both sides as the smoke and dust cleared.
The Oblitirators held the objective on the Chaos side of the Bridge. The bridge itself was held by a swarm of Hormogaunts (who sneakily used tunnels and without number) and the Imperial Tower was held by a unit of Chaos Terminators who Deep Striked on Turn 3 and had held the building ever since.
The Greatest Casualty suffered by the forces of Evil came from their own side as Shippy Strength ‘D’ hands descended on the Chaos Warlord Titan and removed it outright from the game stating it was no fun!
That little piece of sportsmanship came too late as the Imperial lines were already absolutely shattered.
The Main Bridge
The combined forces of Good knew they had to hold this bridge at all costs as it was a highway into the heart of the city and allowing the forces of Evil to gain an early foothold would prove disastrous for their plans. All of the Commanders of the Forces of Good various armies all pitched in to hold onto this vital objective.
A massive amount of Imperial Tanks and Weapons Teams fanned out around the mouth of the Bridge waiting for their first glimpses of who it was they would be facing. The looming form of an Ork Mega Gargant shadowed them even though its incredibly sized self was over in another sector. They did not have to wait long as the veritable carpet that was the Tyranid Terror made itself visible…

Ben ‘Shippy’ Shipway commanded the Tyranid Forces who would make an attempt at the Main Bridge into the heart of the city. 9,500 points of Tyranids would form his force including the largest formation of Gaunts ever seen all fielding, 8 Carnifexes, plenty of Warriors, Zoanthropes and a Barbed Heirodule affectionately known as ‘Barbara’.
The Imperial Lines opened up on the Tyranids with full uncompromising Force and destroyed nearly 100 of their number. Although it would not slow the Tyranids down they figured it would take the Nids 3 turns to cross the bridge and if they could account for similar numbers in each of those turns it would only be a matter of mopping off the remnants of the swarm.
They could not be more wrong.
Evil turn 1 came along as Shippy laughed as he replaced a majority of the Gaunts destroyed in the Imperial players first turn back on the bridge and closer to the defences as they had been previously. The look of horror was apparent on the defenders faces as they realised the Gaunts, hundreds of Gaunts all had without number and could redeploy using the tunnels under the imperial city!
They had not only failed to slow the swarm they actually bought them closer!
The Forces of Good began to focus on the bigger bugs but all they could do was dent and chip the Chitin armour as the big bugs were tooled up for such an onslaught. More Gaunts fell but luckily as shippy had overrun his tunnel marker he stated to redeploy them in other parts of the area and soon there were bugs causing mayhem everywhere.
By turn 4 the big bugs were in the city and nothing could stop them. Barbara destroyed everything she set her sights on including 3 russes in one turn and the Carnifexes fanned out and cleared the city of Imperial Defences.
The Forces of Good did collect one moral victory over the nids by Destroying the Barbed Heirodule on the final turn of the game. But it was no Imperial Tank, No Orbital Bombardment but a solitary Ork Big Mek and his trusty Shokk Attak Gun who until that point in time had been completely forgotten about for the entire game.
At the end of turn six the game was finished, the Nids started digesting the dead and it was revealed that the nids held all the objectives in this zone.
