Although I can only write this from my own experience I have to say that Random Alliance was a fantastic if a little stressful experience. I say stressful as the opposite teams objectives were hidden for the majority of the game and you tended to gamble on what it is you think they are doing. I think this was a great way to play 40k and it really seem to give it a bit more of a refreshing change.
The day started off a little late as we waited for late comers but it still managed to kick off without too much waiting around.
Hagrid had bought along his sorting hat (no doubt stolen from Hogwarts) and it was from this that teams were drawn.
Games had 2.5 hours to be played. The game time allowance change was made as the night before two games were played using the random alliance structure and these tended to go for around 3 hours.
It was interesting to see how teams went about playing the games. A lot of the time you would see a good pairing up with team mates going about their oobjectives whilst bolstering each others strengths and minimising the weaknesses but more often than not most of the strategy came from bluffing opponents, questioning opponents previous opponents on what mission they had done or just throwing skittles about.
I managed to get to play opponents I have never played before aswell as team up with people I have never allied with. It is interesting being an Ork player and allying up with the likes of Tau or Guard as it gave me the support for my troops as they rush headlong into battle with the allies giving you fire support. This did not always go to plan as you can see from my results but it was fun... even when your BigMek teleports himself into combat at the worst possible time!
The day ended late nd at around 9:30pm the announcememnts were made as to who had won. The final positions are listed below.
1st Place Steven Flaherty (22bps, Marines)
2nd Place Liam "Uberbeard" (21bps, Tyranids)
3rd Place Steven "Blood Diamond" H (21bps, Space Wolves)
*2nd/3rd spot was a tie for BP's and Team Objectives completed so it came down to personal objective achievements!
Drew "weak c*nts" McLeod (19bps, Guard)
Jacob "Cadbury" Matulick (19bps, Blood angels)
Adrian "Vindictiv" (18bps, Eldar)
Ryan "Mez?" (17bps, Guard)
Alex "Brewmaster" (17bps, Guard Infantry)
Shane "Beer Baron" Miller (17bps, Tyranid Monsters plus 6 ripper bases)
Craig "Hagrid" Hamilton (15bps, Tau)
James "Jimm" (15bps, Dark Angels)
Steven "Shippy" Conglomerate (14bps, Guard/Nids)
Ash "Gormath" Hall (14bps, Orks)
Mag "Remember who cooks you dinner when working out tournament winners" Harrop (12bps, Nurgle Marines)
The end of the gaming was just the beginning as the day happened to fall on my Birthday so it was back to my place with a majority of the gamers for some home made yiros cooked by John aka John the Plumber. after a days gaming there is nothing like kicking back around a fire, beers in hand being served a hot yiros with meat cooked on a spit before your eyes.
I would like to thank those that attended especially those who made a long drive up (Jacob and Blood Diamond from Renmark and Steve S from Pt Lincoln).
the next 40k Tournament at GG is happening the week before JA and will be the perfect time to hone your lists and have a crack at the format.
Next month sees a Fantasy Tournament hit the GG so stay tuned for more details on that!
Pics of the Random Alliance after shenanigans will be posted shortly...
