With the passing of the 11th of December so comes the passing of another great Greenacre Gamers event. Clash of the Titans saw the legends of the 41st millenium take to battle vying for title of Ultimate General!
Ten of Greenacre Gamers finest took to the battlefields utilizing a standard FOC with one little twist; the must take one named HQ and that Character could take a bodyguard squad in the form of any one Elites choice from their codex. This Character Bodyguard combo also counted as a scoring unit and this saw some interesting combinations.
The day started traditionally late with games meaning to start at 11 but rather starting closer to midday. As the first dice rolled on the tables the mandatory and traditional quaffing of Hammer and Tongs was underway which soon led the way for the tapping of the Keg provided by Brew master Alex.
The first mission was an objective mission utilizing the pitched battle deployment. A central objective was placed in the dead center of the table and each player also got to deploy an objective in their deployment zone no closer than 18inches to the central objective or 6 inches of a table edge. Only the General from each army could hold the central objective whereas the other objectives were claimable in the usual fashion. This led to some massive firefights and melee combats around the center of each table much to the enjoyment of this T.O.
I'll note here that each mission had identical bonus points:
5 points for killing your opponents general
10 points for killing your opponents general with your general and bodyguard.
A win saw 10 points, draw 5 points and loss 3 points.
Each game was given around 2.5 hours to be completed.
Round two was a Kill points mission using table quarters with a generous push back. The objective was to kill as many of your opponents army as possible and used the regular Kill points structure but granted double kill points for units killed by your general. Some impressive tallies were created in this mission.
There was some confusion in regards to outflanking but this was cleared up by speaking to my rules advisers (Shippy and Shane)
Round 3 was easily the most tactically mind numbing mission of the day; Recon. You had to get your scoring units into your opponents deployment zone and scored points for each one standing at the end of the battle, Generals scored double points. What made this one really interesting is that we used Dawn of War deployment meaning that whoever deployed first was literally on their opponents deployment boundary but also brought them closer to their opponents fire line.
Many interesting tactics were used for this mission and it was quite satisfying seeing people spending a lot of time working out where and what they would deploy if anything.
Soon enough time came around for the final game to wind up and the champions were declared. Before I go into who won there are a few thank yous that I need to make for allowing this day to run smoothly:
Alex who supported us with beer, extra terrain and his usual boisterous nature on the tabletop.
Shippy and Shane for once again advising me on the rules when even I was stumped, these guys know their stuff.
Meg for bankrolling the tags upfront.
Fify for gumbying.
Mark of Movie Nights for allowing us to use the room all night and give those traveling from afar a place to stay.
Beer for making us all feel good.
I hope I didn't miss anyone?
Of course, the Mt Gambians for making their way down once again to duke it out with the other members of their club away from home.
Well onto place getters:
1st Ben Shipway using Ghazgkull and 6 Meganobs. Ghazgkull killed every general he fought against in single combat raking up the bonus points for the ultimate victory.
2nd Craig using Farsight and 5 crisis suit sergeants. These formed quite the flexible unit and along with the rest of the firepower he took in his army it was surprising that Craig did not take out his second GG victory.
3rd Adrian using Eldrad and 10 Wraithguard. 10 Wraithguard... need I really say more? Adrian has played in a number of GG events and it's good to see him place on the leader board especially as he actually came second in a previous event but a calculations mess up saw it not rewarded..
4th Liam using the Swarmlord and 2 Hiveguard. The Swarmlord is such an imposing character and backed up with a Hiveguard bodyguard helped him take this place on the ladder.
5th Steve using Marneus Calgar and his Honor Guard. Steve has a knack for making hard lists and rarely goes undefeated at GG unless its against Craig who just happened to be his grudge match opponent.
6th Shane using the Swarmlord and 1 Tyrant Guard. Maybe a few more tyrant guard would have seen this be a harder hitting combo?
7th Ryan using Commissar Yarrick and 6 Ogryns. Although Ryan won most of his games it was Yarricks inability to remain standing at the end of any of his games that saw opponents score big against him. However Yarrick did not go down easily managing to make 14 get back up rolls throughout the day!
8th Alex using Uriel and 10 banshees. This was a beautifully painted army and won best of show. I think its the large amount of weaker eldar armored vehicles that may have let this team down.
9th Andy using Creed plus his bodyguard. Andy loves to go for draws it seems as thats how all his games went. Creed stayed locked up in a chimera for the duration of his battles hoping to stay safe from the more adept combat generals he faced.
10th Fify using Marneus Calgar and 5 Assault Terminators. I did not get to see his games but going from his total of 11 points I'm going to assume that he did not do so well.
So there you have it a different idea for a tournament that seemed to work out well and provide a few fun games for the punters. Photos to be uploaded in the next few days so keep your eyes peeled.
Stay tuned for 'Broken Lists' slated for Feb 2011... Whats Broken Lists... well it's a 1500pt 40k tournament that is well broken. Standard FOC but your army can be picked across as many different armies as you want. This one should be interesting!
