Winds of Magic 09 (now with pics)

What a journey this tournament was for those who participated. It had been canceled, reopened, threatened to be canceled, turned into a campaign and then finally it was a tournament again!

Pure madness....

Even after all the mishaps, drop outs, last minute additions (some people writing lists on the day, yes I am looking at you Victorians Winds of Magic still managed to be a very enjoyable event for those that participated.

Saturday morning started out nice and early as I made my way down to the Dice and Deck expecting to run a Mighty Empires Campaign. By about 10:30 we had a few more additions to the event and a vote was made to reopen the weekend as a Warhammer Fantasy Tournament. With that army lists were rewritten and in some cases written up.

The first games still managed to get underway only half an hour late which is much better than last time we held a fantasy tournament which started an hour late due to a problem with someones lunch.

The roster of participants was as follows and in no particular order:

Steve H: (Bega) Lizardmen although I played in the first round for him due to his lateness as a result of his 18th birthday party the night before (I lost by a massacre and this probably prevented him getting first or second place haha)

Scott N: Warriors of Chaos. As a Victorian he should have used an all Nurgle list dressed in ponchos and sombreros. Still did pretty good for his first tournament. Round one was his second game of fantasy ever!

Borchard: He does have a first name but buggered if I can remember it right now. Dark Elves. He smashed my Night Goblins in the first round (stupid Assassin) Another new fantasy player from Victoria.

Matt L: Bretonnia. A very cavalry orientated army lead by a guy on a bear!. He made his way up from Adelaide Saturday Morning and is a brilliant sportsman.

Brad V: Tomb Kings. Secong tournament in Renmark and second win. If he makes it to the next fantasy tournament there will be a bonus prize for knocking him off the winners pedestal

Stanley G: Dwarfs. Did not lose a game due to a solid core of hard hitting shorties. Did he massacre everyone?

Paul C: Empire. This time round he only started throwing around his miniatures in round 4. Thats a record for him!

Scott B (Bowds): Empire. He fielded that filthy steam tank. I do not think anyone managed to destroy it. Another bonus prize next time around for destroying it should he be fielding it!

Meg-anne H: Vampire Counts. A Lustrian/Pirate themed army was her choice for her first ever fantasy tournament.

Corey A: Orcs and Goblins. The list was sound in theory (it contained Grimgore so by rights should have won in my completely unbiased greenskin loving opinion) But was not meant to be...


By the end of the 5 games people started to look a bit haggard. Apparently playing games all day for two days will do that to you. However there could only be a few winners so here they are and there points. First score is Total, second battle and third sports:

So there you have it. Winds of Magic 09 was a great success given that it was not going to happen. There will be another tournament for Warhammer Fantasy Battle held about June/July so keep your eyes peeled.

Just want to saw thanks for running the tournament, Ash. It was a load of fun. It's nice to go somewhere else, and play other people and armies (even if they grind you into the ground!).

My highlight of the whole event has to be when Bega's Salamanders ate all but one of their crew.

No problems, thanks for coming coming all this way to play.
There will be another Fantasy Tournament about June/July. Will be smaller, say about 1500pts. This will allow some more new players to join in. Will also be slightly different to a standard tournament.

Yeah was great, although i played incredibly dodgily the whole time due to my noobiness and also some bad information (f**king stanley! may your stunties have their beards shaved off! 4plus saves my f**king ass)
I found it a great experience and due to borrowing all those models i got to play a similar army list to what i had planned, so am able to tweak it before i get to painting and buying the rest of the army (get ready to see frenzied lancers galore
Favorite moments are 2 fold: Cloying Quagmire being cast with irresistable force at Meg's big blood knight unit and watching it kill almost all of them including her Vamp Lord general thus causing the rest of the army to crumble. The other was watching my lancers choose out the hardest cavalry in 2 games, charge and over run them, despite being outnumbered. Now if only i can learn to use my marauder horsemen properly....

Well now you know how to play the game and what your army is capable of. Glad you enjoyed it, better see you for the next one (crashing on my couch again?

your Marauder Horsemen can fulfill several roles, March Blocking while harassing your enemy in the rear. Supporting charges by hitting in the flank or rear and negating rank bonuses etc, Warmachine Crew hunters (speaks for itself) or just a cheap way to claim quarters.

I am sure you will do much better next time.

For those of you who like to know such things, I have a little blog I write that chronicles my Warhammer adventures. I wrote up a review of sorts of the tournament. Basically about all the games I played.

It's all observations, thoughts and laments, so take it with a grain of salt. But if you read it and it helps you become a better player, I think it's worth it.

Also, anyone got a photo of my game against Bega? I stupidly forgot to take one, and the blog post is lacking for it.

haha, besides your marauders, knowing the chaos warriors hav a TWO plus save not a four plus is always a bonus hahaha

Lol yeah. im still trying to work it out properly, thats the one thing that annoys me about fantasy theres alot more working things out.

yea, there are a number of rules that are taken for granted that arnt in the book anymore, its just easier to take them for granted as everyone still uses them too. eg, you dont get the extra plus one to armour save if you hav a hand wep and shield if the wepon magic or your mounted so yea. we still use that lol. it takes some gettin used to but it fun!

Indeed, well hopefully ill be getting in alot more games soon. If i get centrelink money sorted out ill be able to finish off my chaos army and be ready to anhilate you properly

i got pooned by shane using empire the other day. because he wasnt using his normal army i went easy to begin with thinking he'd need time to get used to it. NOPE! i forgot it not like he new to warhammer haha, he cained me. you nearly beat me too!

Shane always has the ability to field insane shooting armies. Although his Wood Elves are pretty much completely HTH orientated do not underestimate what he can do with a few guns. I bet he could get a good Orc shooting army together (ludicrous)

I think it just comes down to the fact that Bega sucks.

He can not beat me in a game and he always seems to need to resort to all sorts of shenanigans like 'quantum physics' and artful rules interpretations. As a matter of fact I shall challenge him to a game soon with my Orks and Goblins just to show the world how crap he is.

And yeah, i almost took down bega, i just need to be a bit better with my spell use and mechanics. As for shenanigans... file a saurus old blood on carnosaur and a engine of the gods under that heading.

If you can take them down you will have taken care of a sizable chunk of his army.
