that last one reminds me of the beaches of normandy on D-day. Its a little known fact that the allies deployed expiremental amphibious tanks. I think it was around 20 deployed but of the amount they sent only 2 reached shore >_>

Had a pneumatically erected ruberised screen around it for floatation, and twin folding props. The numbers you're refering too are the ones that were launched too far offshore on the Yankee beaches. The majority of the ones launched off the British beaches pretty much all made it ashore because their landing craft commanders weren't all girly men (as Arnie would put it ;D ) and launched their charges a lot closer to the beaches.

Its a missile the Jet has just fired..... Actually Danny it's a flight deck, it's on a carrier... And general consensus is that the missile has come loose on landing, rather than having been fired, so SHOULD be unarmed - I still wouldn't want to be too close! Actually if I may shed some final light on this matter. Being a veteran of the flight deck for 8 years and an aviation mechanic with the Navy and Marines I can actually identify this scenario. the pup was quite close in his answer but some things were slightly off. That missle is in fact armed. Before leaving the flight deck all weapons are armed prior to launch. That peticular missle, a sidewinder is armed by the removal of a detent wrench. Which is like a pin that must be rotated first and then removed. The only thing that prevents it from being airborn death after that point is the selection of it by the pilot and pulling the trigger on the stick. This has actually happend a good number of times on the flight deck. It likely fell off due to a mechanical failure with the wingtip rack locking system, OR poor maintenance by the ordnance personel. With the amount of violent force and jarring that comes from landing on the flight deck and catching the arresting wires, it is more likely a mechanical issue. The sailor running away from it was never directly inline or really even THAT remotely close to where that missle was traveling to. However, who the hell would want to be even in the vacintiy of that should it happen to explode?
