About 2 weeks ago I picked up a set of the Fortress of the Archkyrie terrain expansion for Heroscape. It contained all the pieces nescessary to build quite a large Fortress (or multiple smaller towers) including a working door and rather cool looking banner.
Its a fully modular set and adds a great new way to play Heroscape.
The components come in the form of:
21 Wall Sections and wall bases. With the bases removed the wall sections are stackable and click in very sturdily allowing you to build walls sections to any height you want. The wall sections also come in three types; straight, wall end and 60 degree bend. With these you can build to any shape that will fit on the hex tiles that make up the main battlefield.
22 Hex wall walk tiles. These come mostly as singles but there is 1 nine Hex tile and 1 seven hex tile. These either clip to the top of the wall sections to form the walkways on top of the walls or can be used as road hexes and laid in with the groundwork.
50 Battlements. These slip onto the side of the wall walk hexes to make up the battlements to provide cover for those manning your walls. They will also connect to any regular hex so you can also make barricades with them at ground level.
22 Ladders. These come in short sections that can be joined together to make up a ladder of any size. They are designed to connect to hex pieces so they can be used to connect to anything that your hex construction imagination can come up with be it the fortress, cliff faces etc.
1 Door Way and 1 Flag. The doorway opens and closes and has a sliding bolt on the back allowing you to bar the door shut. The flag fits nicely over any battlement piece and forms the objective for many games.
(Just one possible set up from literraly thousands. Your imagination is the only real limit)
It would appear that the parts are made from the same plastic that makes up all the hexes from the various Heroscape Packs meaning it is quite robust. The exception is the flag which is made from the plastic that Heroscape Minis are made from which is a good thing as it gives the flag itself a softer appearence.
I did have some trouble when it came to pulling apart a few of my wall sections and even resulted in the bottom part of one pulling away from the main piece. this was however quickly remedied with a little plastic glue which it seems is the same glue its constructed with in the first place.
I have constructed a few battlefields with the Fortress and have had a few games using it. You get plans to build a specific battlefield with which to fight the two scenarios that come in the box. One being a straight forward defence mission and the other a save the ambushed party mission. Both missions are fun but the attacking player in the ambush mission has it slightly better off than the other player/players.
(A slightly raised angle to give more detail)
there are some seriously talented table builders on heroscapers.com who also seem to have bottomless wallets. The few photos below give a really good idea what you can build with enough sets (and enough patience)
(Fulcrum Forever by Piherculis)
(Fulcrum Frigid by Piherculis. Ice terrain from the Thaelenk Tundra Expansion)
I'm seriously thinking of picking up another copy in order to build bigger fortresses and am even coming up with some scenarios of my own. At $50 I reckon its well worth the investment and I can see it being used quite heavily in my future games of Heroscape.
