Well with the new 40k Tyranid codex now out and all giddy from the new units that are available and different wargear options and rules, its now time to reveal my new fleet.....Hive Fleet Mermaid......it has appeared from deep space to devourer your flesh. even just the name of it will chill you to the bones.........gah, i have no idea what to call it yet.
Hive Fleet <unamed> will be new nid collection. I'm over the Kraken fleet colours, they were pretty but time comsuming to paint, and I want to come up with my own colour scheme. That whole "damn right that's my scheme there, i came up with that" has its appeal.
So with a new army to now paint and devise, I've left the actual collection of the army for the moment, until I playtest around and read the codex back to back to get a good feel for the army again, and memorise the new rules. I'll get around to getting the minis all sorted and a list made up, there are some units that are must buys and will be there no matter what.
So with the new army I wanted something real and taken from the world that we live in for ideas. I first started with the setting on which the army will be modelled on. Looking back through my armies, i have a grasslands (Tyranids & Blood angels), a cityfight (Necrons), The Emperor's Pride (Desert) and Elysians (Snow). So from that there aren't too many natural settings to pick from. I was looking through some pics in a white dwarf of tyranid invasions, and there is an illustration of these nids coming down onto a jungle planet and some artillery batteries are gunning them as they come down. That got my attention, the whole coming down in a thick jungle and the mycetic spores encouraging growth of the plants around to rapidly sprout new growth everywhere. then there is the catachan jungle fighters who seem to be drawn killing them in art work. It also makes me think of Jurassic park 1 where the velicoraptors are out and about slaying people as they go and try to restart the power on the island.....But with that i had decided on my new setting, the jungle. I haven't got too many ideas yet as for opportunites for modelling, but i'm sure they'll come to mind soon enough. Lictors walking through vines or something like that, bursting from a log or something.
anyway, now the problem of colours, i started looking at jungle animals (mainly insects and the like) and how they camouflage themselves into their surrounding. two seperate patterns came out. there are those that blend into the trees leaves and branches in greens through to browns. and the then there were those with outrageous colours to ward off predators warning them they are poisonous etc. i don't like the browns and greens because they look boring and dull, the colourlful ones have my vote. i liked the bright colours because of what it represents, they don't need to blend in with the surroundings because they have a trump card, they are deadly in some form or another, mainly in poisons. they are usually the little animals also. so after some more poking around in jungle animals, i came across jungle frogs. they are very small and with the brightest of colours. the colours ranged from yellows to reds, to orange and blue. there were several that caught my eye, but i after much deliberation i picked out the humble blue poison arrow frog. these little blighters have more than enough poison to kill humans, only needing 2 micrograms in our system to drop someone. so they are deadly, which ties in with nids, cos they are deadly also.
anyway, the contrast in the blues is what gets me. the dark blue on the underside and the light blue on top with black dots. it looks very nice. so i started thinking about how to incorporate the colours onto a model. I think that the carapace would be the light blue turning white at the peaks, with black dots only partially covering. on the larger models more dots would cover their chitin to make them look, well damn cool. also on some variant species have yellow tanning from the nose down across their back, so unique models can have that blended in maybe too. and then the rest of the model with a dark blue, which then blends lighter as it gets closer to the chitin. the talons and claws/hoofs would also be light blue, maybe not with the black spots. with this in mind i set about my first test model. i'm pleased with the results, and i'll have to take a photo and post it up very soon.
anyway with the work day finished i better get off and head home. i'll update with test model pic next time.
so begins the first diary of the hivemind
