This months Sunday Session of the Adelaide Board Games Guild was once again well attended with over a dozen gamers descending on the venue for some furiously fun gaming. As there were two large gaming conventions/tournaments/events having happened since the last session some new games made an appearance. Unfortunately I did not have the chance to play any of the new goods I did have a go at some games I had never had the luck to play before. The day for me started with a quick game of the 'infernal contraption' using a fast play variant. This variant allows you to place plugs in the mainline which can open up some very powerful combinations of cards. One such combination had me throwing out my hand twice in a single pull of the lever leaving me with no cards in the scrap pile making my machine redundant quite early in the game. Next was 'Pandemic' the game of, well, pandemics. It's a cooperative game which has you and the other players trying to find cures for the varying viruses before they destroy the human race. This game was incredibly fun and was quite nail biting at times especially in the end game where we knew we only had one more round of play and had one last virus to cure. I was the only one who could cure the virus and it was uprto the player before me (which happened to be majordodo) to pull a good card allowing an extra move to allow us to win. Dodo had to pull two cards and the first card was of great benefit. Cries of jubilation went up as we were going to be able to cure the virus and win the game. But alas it was not to be as dodo pulled his second card and revealed an outbreak. the virus spread fast through the middle east and Europe where it would eventually take the world. Dodo had doomed us all! The last game was a 6 player game of 'Betrayal on House on the Hill'. Essentially we were exploring a vast and creepy mansion with all sorts of nasty surprises along the way. Everyone had a character card each of which is different. I pulled the professor which gave me high stats in knowledge and sanity. Exploration is as quick as pulling a card from the stack and attaching it to the board. Usually there is something in the room which requires you to either draw from one of the decks (Event, Item or Omen) and alot of these will modify your stats. the stats tell you how many dice to roll in a given encounter. Combat uses the might stat, tests of knowledge use the knowledge stat and so on. Anyways, you continue exploring the mansion and meet challenges along the way until the bad guy is revealed. In this particular game it was revealed that we were staying in the mansion with the objective of surviving the night to each get our inheritance from our dead great uncle.... very cliched. even more cliched was the fact that one of us had been disowned and was plotting revenge against the rest of the players in order to horde all the money for themselves! It was a great game to begin with but once the bad guy was revealed it got even better. In the end it was myself and Dodo who survived the night, house and evil servants! It was a great day and I got to play some new games too. Really you can not ask for much more.

Hmm... forgot to mention that in the game of Pandemic we played we used the 'On the Brink' expansion which introduces the mutated virus element to the game. I quickly dubbed this The Zombie Strain'
