As expected this last session was very under attended. With the Easter weekend and Sunday session all falling at the same time it was a wonder that we had anybody at all
But still those who showed up had a great time of killing monsters, looting treasures and stabbing each other in the back. You guessed it...
Munchkin!
I had never played any of the Munchkin games before but man are they fun. If you are a light hearted gamer (like myself) or just after a chilled out session (like I was) then this game is something you should have a look at.
In no way does it take itself seriously or the genres it represents. We had copies of Munchkin Bites ('horror' themed) and Super Munchkin ('Superhero' themed). There was also a copy of Munchkin Blender which allows you to throw all the different Munchkin games together for some seriously random styles and craziness.
The game plays very simply and smoothly and is essentially based around the structure of kicking in a door (drawing from the door deck), dealing with any traps, monsters or other random stuff, if you beat a monster draw from the treasure deck.... Tgere are some other things in there like 'looking for trouble' or 'looting rooms' but it all comes down to drawing cards and dealing with them.
Other players can help you if you request it (sometimes if you dont) and there is generally a lot of wheeling and dealing over the rules of the partnership. Its interesting to play as in the beginning players are more than happy to help each other out for some loot, partnerships are made and everyone is working together but as characters get more powerful heads expand and everyone goes out for themselves. Negotiations get rough, knives are placed in backs, sandpaper is applied..... and its all in the name of fun!
The first to level 10 wins!
Then there is EPIC MUNCHKIN!!!!
First to level 20 wins. When you are level 10 or higher you are so fantastic you start to kick 2 doors in at once, your race gets stronger with special abilities and people try to screw you over big time.
I really really liked this game and at the sounds of cringing of the more serious gamers out there I am actually putting this in my top 5 games list.
Since regular Munchkin was not on offer I have made it my quest to purchase it and hopefully have it hit at a table sometime soon.
