Was another good evening for gaming at Greenacre Gamers.
I can really only speak from mmy own experience (and dont ask me why I am chronicalling every gaming night....). If anyone else wants to share that would be great!
40K
Rumble in the Jungle (minus the jungle)
I knew I was most likely to be having a rematch against Shane and his 'Marines of DOOM!' so I knew I would have to do something to swing things back in my favour. The last game we had my Orks were annihilated by the end of turn 4 and the only reason why I lasted that long is because I retreated back to an objective and went down to ground every chance I had.... Very unorky but I felt I needed to salvage something from the game.
I knew I needed more boyz as in the prev game I was only using two squads of 20. I went through my stuff and found my Stompa box which was literally filled with Boyz frames and quickly got to work assembling them. I stuck at this till I could field 4 units of 30 Boyz. I threw in a Nobz Squad and my Warboss and I had 1500pts and 131 miniatures.
Shane rocked up and to my horror he had decided to field Nids!
NIDS!
I was not expecting that.
The game we rolled up was a two objective mission with Dawn of War rules. Shane won the right to choose sides, set up first and get first turn so he set up right on the outside edge of one of the larger fortifications denying me that easy, cover aided road to his objective.
I set up as close as possible to his troops (18inch pushback) with two of my Boyz squads with a set of ruins anchoring my left flank.
Shane through down his infiltrating unit of 'stealers and his Broodlord. As he had the first turn this unit of Genestealers threatened to destroy half of my deployed units in the very first turn. I needed something good and something quick.
I rolled a '6' for stealing the initiative!
I advanced my two deployed units of boyz as far forward as I could whilst bringing on my Nobz squad (with attached warboss) and another boyz squad to bring up the rear.
My fourth Boyz squad deployed right behind the Genestealers who were deployed only 6 inches from my table edge.
First turn shooting was uneventful for me as my entire army ran towards the nid lines. Unfortunately this was even more uneventful with the really low numbers rolled. I wanted to get closer early as Shane had informed me of what his Shooty Termagants were capable of.
The assault phase between my Boyz and the Genestealers went my way and resulted in the breaking of the Nidz. Unfortunately (and not surprisingly) I was unable to cut them down in their retreat.
Shanes first turn was quite shooting heavyt with my Orks suffering large losses to Shootygant fire. Shane left his bugs outside of my moving and Assault ranges ensuering he got the assaults wherever possible.
The middle of the game was made up mostly of Assault phases with assaults lasting several turns and fire only being opened as the armies realigned for further assaults.
I managed to knock out all the bugs scoring units early in the game so all I needed to worry about was keeping stuff alive long enough to maintain my hold on at least one objective. In order for me to fail at doing that Shane would have to destroy every one of my units.
In the end I won out the day but a lot of that was to do with luck. If I had not have stolen the first turn I would have probably not made it past turn four as his Genestealers would have chewed through my lines forcing me to counter with available units leaving me with fewer numbers to take on his main line.
This is the first time I have played against the new Nids and I must say they have some really annoying units. The Deathleaper being one of them!
I really enjoyed the game and I'm sure we will have to refight this one.
Warmachine
Brad Demos up a Storm
As I was playing this game I was lucky enough to see how the new Warmachine/Hordes rules work. Brad had brought two small Warmachine Battlegroups with him and ran a demo game for Meg and Alex. I had never really got around to playing the old rules but I had read them and from what I could see the new rules are much more streamlined.
It looked like they were having a lot of fun with the game and from the conversations held afterwards it looks like Warmachine will be a game to be played regularly at the club.
I shall start stripping my Sorscha and Jacks soon ready for a repaint and Meg will be able to bust out her pirate mercenaries.
Alex has also mentioned he may buy up some models.
Bloodbowl
League Discussions?
Bloodbowl was also being played but I did not get to see much of the match. What was interesting is that there were discussions beetweeen the commisioner and the recruitment officer about how to best run a league for the NFI.
I did not get to hear many details so i'll leave it up to those guys to fil us in on a later dae but it is very much looking like there will be a new BB league started up in the near future.
Looking forward to it!
And that was about it for the last Greenacres Gamers session. The club is definitely growing and we are getting about seven gamers each session but the specific attendees do cycle. We have a regular core with a decent number of more casual gamers. We will be running an open day soon so that should bring us some more numbers and add that too the planned pamphlet drop I think this club is set to thrive over the coming months.
