"They're coming to get you Barbara" Yes, it's one of the more iconic lines in horror movie history and if you do not know what it is from then shame on you! Zombies, zombies, zombies Thats what my project is going to be all about. I have made mention of this in another thread somewhere but now I can start to talk about it in full! This will be a total gaming project from the rules up. I will be basing the rules on the 'Reaction System' from Two Hour Wargames (a very very cool gaming system and mechanic... none of this I go, You go nonsense) and more specifically 'All Things Zombie' The rules as presented as they are are pretty cool but I have one or two really minor things to add to them to make this work a little bit more like the movie..... I will build a complete gaming table specific for this game. Not sure if it will be a 4X4 or a 6X4 yet but probably the former. It will have the farm house, fuel pump, surrounding land. I may even compress the scale a little to add in the outskirts of the grave yard and the broken car crashed into the tree along the road. Then theres the miniatures. Wargames Factories brand new Zombies Horde miniatures will be the main protagonists for the game. They are a multipart, multi posed kit and they are awesome! There will be about 75 zombies for this... They are modern day zombies and the scale is such that they should quite easily blend with some of the components from GW's zombies (Meg has plenty of bits so no seperate purchase necessary Unfortunately there are no female zombies but have found a few companies that produce them, just need to do a scale comparison. Finally I need the heros/survivors. Many different companies make some very suitable miniatures for these and I'll take a seperate look at these in a future post.

I probably should have posted that link in my entry... But yes those are the ones! The paint job is a little slack and I hope to do better than what you see there. Will be going with a little more realistic tone on the dead (not a big fan of the comical zombie look).

I had no idea these guys did Stargate SG1 Minis... I have seen the zombies pictured on other forums but never ventured to the actual site. They are very cool indeed... but metal..
I know thats a shit excuse for not grabbing them but I have somewhat of an aversion to metal minis these days. Still I may consider a few of the packs if I can find out if they size up well with the plastics I am ordering. They are 28mm but there is usually size discrepencies still.

Well, are you finished yet or what? The THW group would be interested to hear about this too as it progresses I'm sure - including rules changes

Those zombie miniatures are more in line with Lotr scale 28mm.

Does the THW group allow links in posts so I can link them to this thread? I will start making posts when this thing starts (need a starting date in early June I reckon)
The rules changes are mainly to do with becoming infected yourself and they will be fun. More on that later....

Hmmm... Its very frustrating having to wait 6 weeks for this thing to begin as I want to jump into this right away!
I guess in the meantime I can have a few games of All Things Zombie (need to pay for it first) to get the feeling of the rules and see what the system does/ is capable of. This really will have a go in deciding on how I will be playing this one out.
In the meantime I can start hypothetically planning out what I will be doing exactly.
The most important things of this project are the places and characters. I reckon I will be rewatching this movie tonight and take some notes. although I know this inside and out I want to make sure I get everything correct, especially the layout of the farmhouse.
Anyways to begin with the planning I need to work out how large I want the board to look. There are very few locations in the movie itself being the cemetary, road and farmhouse (including gas pump). Will I be including all these locations?
If I want to keep a true sense of scale with the movie I will probably just be going with the farmhouse and surrounding land but the cemetary is such a cool bit of the movie and is where it all starts. I can 'compress' the land and have the cemetary in one corner of the board, niot the whole thing but just the edge. Then I can have the road wind through some trees and lead to the farm house. Yep, I like that.
That settled the board will be a 6x4 modular construction being made up of 3 2x4 sections. 1 section will have the cemetary and winding part of the road. Another section will contain the house and gas pump. The final section will have some surrounding land, woods and maybe another structure (barn?)
Its been a while since I made something modular so this shall be fun to do.
The farmhouse itself will be made up in levels allowing full access to the inside space. There is the basement, ground floor, upper floor all seen in the movie and although not seen there is a attic space which I will model in. I will model the rooms to be open spaces so not too much furniture except for a few functional bits which the players can use as barricades, bust up for boarding up the windows etc.
I reckon I will model the house and the rest of the board in 3d before I begin construction which is something else I can do before this is due to start.

Rewatched the movie last night as I did some research into the locations of the shoot. It really is quite difficult to find production photos of the locations themselves. The house that was used for the external, groundfloor and basement shoots has been razed!
The upper floor shoot location is now some office building. All that really remains is the cemetary but unfortunately thats not going to be a major part of the board.
Looks like the best I can do for this is watch the movie closely, watch the characters move from room to room and try to come up with a floor plan from that. There are a few scenes which show external shots of the house so I can get the general shape and make the insides to fit.
I reckon I will be making some changes to this house though to fit in with gameplay but all up I would like to stay as true to the material as possible while making for a good gaming experience.
But now something has happened that may put a spanner in the works of this project. I recently rewatched Evil Dead for about the 50th time and now I feel myself being dragged towards it for inspiartion. The Cabin, the bridge and surrounding forrest would make for a cool looking board. Maybe I can mash the two films together?
Zombies and Deadites could work well hand in hand. The slow shuffling zombies who are weak alone but strong in numbers and the faster moving, strong deadites that mock the survivors... Could make for some cool dynamics for gameplay... and that has not even taken Ash into account.
Sooo... a cemetary, farmhouse, cabin, the bridge, winding dirt road, woods, deadites, zombies, survivors and Ash?

Damn it!
you think you have life all sorted out and then BAM! something new comes along and gets you all excited... I am talking about the new Imperial Guard Valkyrie. You see when I heard it was being released in plastic I wanted to 'loot' it for my orcs. Now that I have seen, held and caressed it I REALLY want to loot it for my orcs. I am going to turn one (or three) into Orc Fighta Bombas!
Now it would seem that what I am writing has got nothing to do with my Tale of Gamers diary.. but it might.
You see, nothing is ever simple when it comes to me and my hobby. The orc Stompa came out and now I want 6-7, FOW became available in the store and I started with something small... now I can not stop expanding it. The Valkyrie comes along and I want a squad of converted Fighta Bombas... which means I want a Orc Air Strip... at an air field... in a city... on a planet...
This may have dire consequences for my aforementioned project. Now I need to choose cause either one will pretty much take up 90% of my hobby time for the next 4-5 months.
I would love to work on either project but am torn...
Orcs or Zombies. Both are an obsession... both are fun to work on... both I know well...
So I leave it to you guys to comment on which you would like to see done. It will probably not have any sway in what I do but you never know...

[glow=red,2,300] Zombies![/glow] There, that was easy, eh? Simple: Grab your Valkyrie(s???) and convert it up during the next month then put it aside once the 'tale' starts. Once the 'tale' finishes continue with the orcs! Nothin' to it. ;D Let's hope nothing else captures your attention for the next four months...

Well... it this has already been bumped back till after these 4 months. There are many reasons for this ranging from the lack of resources to acquire the foamcore in large enough quantities through to having an even grander idea of what I will be doing with this... It involves a lot more planning then first thought. This is now a future project for 'Rusted Raven'...
Do not worry, zombies will be hitting the tables soon enough but in a somewhat different way.
