Hey Ash, my copy of the ATZ board game arrived yesterday
Components aren't bad, but things like the board could be nicer for the price (OK, Retail price... Mine was a gift from Ed ). I think the edges might fray and lift after a bit of use, though I'm sure there's ways to prevent it. Rulebook is cheap glossy paper, stapled in the middle. Cards aren't great quality, but are slightly heavier paper than the rulebook, so should last if you're careful. Some of the card backs have a slightly different shade of printing, though It shouldn't affect gameplay in the end.
Rules wise - MUCH lighter than the ATZ mini game. It's pretty much 1 hit to kill a zombie, no rolling against weapon impact or anything like that, so pistols and assault rifles are equally effective at killing things, but range and rate of fire differ. Survivors are harder to kill, having a number of wounds before death, tracked on a player card. At a set number of wounds, the counter is flipped, which reduces the player stats.
All in all, I think it'll be fun. Lighter than the mini game, I think the lad will take to it better too. I plan on putting down a counter, then placing a 15mm mini on top of the counter, just for prettyness. I also intend to, in time, work in the mini rules. Keep the simple setup of the game board, hexes, zeds etc, but make the campaign a little deeper, like the mini game. Some folks are already doing this I believe, and it's reported to work well.
