Beasts of War have recently done a short series of videos with Alessio Cavatore about what we might be able to expect from the Kings of War ruleset.
At this stage nothing is official as Alessio's mind can change like the wind but what he has said could be making it into the system and the major streamlining of Wargames rules conventions has me more than a little excited.
KoW will be a rule set that is very friendly for both casual gaming as well as organised/tournament style play. Chess clocks are likely to be a convention introduced to the game for organised and time restricted events.
The ruleset at it's core has the player doing all his interactions within his turn. There are no dice rolls required by your opponent in your turn so Alessio has done away with things such as Armour Saves, striking back and morale tests.
Alessio has also done away with the large sets of tables that some games systems use. All roll success targets are literally in the units statistics themselves. You make a roll to hit based on your stat then a 'wound' roll based on your opponents defense stat.
Models are not removed from units but rather wound markers are used to keep track of a units 'damage' which will alter your 'testing of nerves' to see if you break from combat.
All nerves tests are made in your turn at the beginning and when a unit breaks it is gone.
Also units have a stat line rather than an individual model. Units of diffferent sizes have different stats so the bigger the unit the more rolls it makes the higher its defense etc. This unit size based statistic would also seem to make sense when purchasing your mantic miniatures as the unit sizes are either Troop (10 men), Regiment (20 models) and battlke formation (40 models). These are conveniently the size of boxes you buy mantic miniatures in!
I shall update this post with more rules as they come out.
Oh and I forgot the best bit... the rules will be 'beta' tested by the public and when they are eventually available in their full form they will come free in any regiment sized box or larger (about $20au for a regiment box).
Also look to the mantic site as they are taking preorders for their first big boxed game 'Morgoths Revenge' which pits the Dwarfs against the Undead. For less than $100au you get the rules and over 100 Mantic miniatures. There are also special extras if you get in with a preorder early.
Morgoths Revenge will not be the only big boxed game Mantic produces as rumour has it they are planning to bring out a big boxed game for every combination of armies they bring out giving you more choice with the value.
