White Lions of Chrace ignore dangerous terrain tests in forests. and High Elf Dragon Princes of Caledor. I've painted a lot of white. I get a lot of success with a canvas white base (Menoth Base White in the Formula P3 range - the sort of colour you'd associate with a sailing ship's sails) with a pure white over the top. You get a nice shade in the recesses without having to worry too much.
For all the horror stories people tell about painting white, I've never had a problem with it for some reason.

My High Elves will be a something other than the stereo typical white. I'll definitely not have white as a color on them.

Using space wolves grey instead of a bone colour gives a cleaner white look I hear, but I prefer the bone colour for the things I use it for like Eldar armour (besides I could not use any product with Space Wolves in the name).

You really want a blue colored base coat as it gives off a 'cool' appearance. I don't mean 'gee that looks really cool' but rather a cooler hue to the tone. Browns is of the red so it gives it a warmer tone.
I guess it really epends on what you are after.
