With 2010 rolling to a close soon enough I guess it's a good time to chat about what we have planned for 2011 and here is a good time for you guys to talk about what you would like to see happen with your club.
First of all we will see all our favorite tournaments come back bigger and better:
"Killteam 2011" will see a points increase for you to choose your armies with. Depending on where we go with this your team may get vehicle backup support with restrictions.
"Random Alliance" will be back with a vengeance. Army size will remain the same but in addition to secret objectives there will also be tactics cards that you can spend through your games.
"Drewpocalypse" well this will be the only event that gets smaller (unless our 102K points gets beaten by one of the clubs on the Guild forums). The fight will move into the city and depending on who wins this time it may go deeper still. This will be a multi game and board event. We have proven once again that we can play the big games so lets make this one more interesting tactically...
"Clash of the Titans 2011" Well at the time of writing we have not played the 2010 edition yet but I know it will be fun and we shall do it again. No comments as to what to change at this stage...
So those are the main 40k events that will make a return but there is at least one event that will be making a first showing:
"Broken Lists 2011" As the name says the lists will be broken. Armies are chosen from as many different codicies as you like as long as you hold true to the FOC. I have no idea what will happen here but it is sure to be interesting...
Well thats 5 regular events and all for 40k. We really need to run events for some other systems and luckily we have those covered too:
"Griffon Grove Adelaide Dungeon Bowl Cup 2010" Alex and the AFOUL mob have been busy organising and playtesting a special set of Dungeon Bowl rules for this upcoming tournament. This is looking to be a fantastic addition to the years Bloodbowl calendar.
"Apoco-alco-bowl" An interesting name to wrap your tongue around which shall be even more interesting once you have had a few alcoholic beverages. This event is essentially Bloodbowl truned into a drinking game of Apocoholic proportions. This baby is set to fly in July.
"Auscape 2011" Tom did a great job of organizing the Southern Hemisphere Championships in 2010 (no really they were the SH championships...) and will hopefully do it again this year. We all know WOTC have dropped the franchise but rumors are that other companies are looking to purchase the HS IP. Regardless there are still heaps of options for gaming so lets make this years Auscape bigger than last time!
"Kings of War Tournament 2011" Just a place holder name. I have now played a few KoW games and it has all but replaced Fantasy Battle for me. I really think the games system is elegant and really is designed for quick turns and quick thinking. I will be running lots of games of this to sucker in you guys... All I need now are some chess clocks!
Well those are the main events out of the way. You Will notice that just about none of that is balanced and it is intentionally so. I really do try to push the fun aspects of the games we play and I think the members of GG really do a good job in supporting that. Now that we have fun at the fore I guess we can start tackling some other projects.
We play a lot of games at GG with everyone playing at least one game each week on average. Usually the games are aimless one offs or part of a personal series of games with a specific opponent. What I would like to see is some form of structured gaming going on week to week and what better way than to play a series of campaigns!
Campaigns!
Structured play is something I think we will excell at at the Greenacre Gamers. We have very fanatical gamers serving as members of the club with no real shortage of opponents or games happening on a given night. Some odd games break out too with interesting team ups and odd opponent draws. We have also run several leagues under the AFOUL division commisioned by Mr Alex.
We ran tournaments at least every second month in our first year and will be pushing for every month this following year but still I think we can go even further into the depths of the hobby.
Campaigns to me are the next logical place to take our gaming and plans are afoot to run at least two in 2011. These will be map based campaigns that will fully utilise Games Workshops Mighty Empires and Planetary Empires. I will be keeping the rules to a minimum in order to focus more on game play but keep them interesting enough that there will be some tactical variety with map moves between the games.
The Fantasy themed Campign of which I would love to use the Kings of Wars Rules for will take place on a newly discovered continent. I do have ideas for backstory here and it shall be published closer to the event.
The 40k Campaign will take place in a small system with multiple planets and planetoids being fought over. The fun part here will be making and painting the map to represent the different planet surfaces.
Both campaigns will be what I call passive campaigns. You will not be required to fight specific opponents at certain times but rather you play your games as you normally do; someones free for a game you play them. What will be important is the mission/scenario and the outcome. You are essentially playing for land with certain land given bonuses to your army selection, points values or both.
There will also be various campaign events thrown in each month through which you get access to new scenarios and the victors can potentially walk away with some great boosts.
There will be more on this when I announce each campaign but rest assured it will give your games greater context and should prove to be very fun.
