I just... obtained... a copy of warhammer ancients and some of the compedium editions and wondered if anyone around here had played it. FLicking through the rulebook it looks exactly identical to fantasy, but without magic and the uber powerful characters. The rules for fear panic skirmishers chariots stubborn light cavalry etc its all in there and the same as far as I can tell at initial glance.
With a wide variety of miniature companies making suitable lines it might be a viable alternative for some of the cash strapped gamers to get a nice sized army for much less than for GW minis.
A mate gave me about a dozen vikings a while back* and one day in the future instead of starting another GW army I might start collecting a historical force.
*well I had a birthday BBQ and he has so many miniatures around his games room he just grabbed to closest unopened blisters to give me as a present! He usually has boxes and boxes of unopened lead!

Warhammer Ancients is a line that we can get through the store. Have been interested in it for a while and the fact that the Perry Twins have done some sculpts (it is their product more or less) makes it actually intriguing.
I like the fact that there are all sorts of periods in it too. And a Vlad the Impaler list to boot in one of the supplemements!
