Dionisio Rodríguez Martín, better known as El Dioni, was born in Madrid in 1949. He became famous on July 28, 1989, at the age of 40, when he stole an armored van from the Candi SA company that contained almost 300 million pesetas. His job was to ensure the safety of said van, however, taking advantage of an oversight by his fellow guards, he escaped with it.
With the loot in his possession, he fled to Brazil, changed his appearance and dedicated himself to living in style: parties, limousines, luxury yachts... His idyll only lasted a couple of months. The Brazilian authorities found him, he spent 10 months in the country's prisons and was later extradited to Spain. Until May 1995, he was not paroled.
140 million stolen in that robbery still have not appeared, that is El Dioni's best kept secret, and something he is not willing to reveal. "The best place to keep them would be my mother's grave," he once said in an interview with the newspaper El Español.
