A few days ago, Arthur C Clarke passed away, Aged 90. The greatest science fiction author I've read, he has a knack of writing what you know is fiction, but at the back of your mind, you know it's not completly out there - His fiction is written within the realms of physics. In the future, who knows how many of his stories might have some truth in them - He wrote about communications satellites, and predicted the vast communications networks we have today well before they existed.
Favourite book of his would have to be 'childhoods end'. Also worth reading is, of course, the Oddessy series (2001, 2010, 2061 and 3001). There's also a number of 'short story' books out there, with a dozen or so short stories which are a good read.

I never really read his books but seen the movie adaptations of a few of them. I was more interested in the man due to the fact that he made a few accurate predictions for the future at the time (they are all past now) Still there are a few that have not come to pass yet but with the way the planet is going they are more than likely to happen:
With the threat of global warming we will stop using fossil fuels, the world will cool down and threaten to throw us into another ice age. To combat this fossil fuel burning will begin anew in order to allow global warming to save us.
That sort of stuff is what im all about... Some guys are obviously in the know and I do doubt he had illuminati ties but you never know...
