New Inks!!!

Bah, even if they are half full these new inks are absolutely amazing. I am painting marines at a very quick pace now.

The inks are definately waaaay superior to their old counterparts. It does not dry on the surface detail (it actually makes its way to the lower surfaces) its not shiney and best of all its waterproof!

No more smudging your models when applying successive layers!

Im assuming in the pic above the inks were applied directly to a white undercoat?

looks great. The current inks make things look too muddy, the application across the raised surface is not even enough, :<

These inks have sparked a little intrest on the folders at work too...

To be fair, these are not your old Citadel washes, not are they similar to the P3 range. The first thing you notice is the thickness of the wash. Long have people advocated the mixing in of things like matt medium, wood glue or dish washing liquid into an ink to break the surface tension. Well GW have cut out the middle man.

The new washes d not pool like the inks of old. They flow nicely over the whole surface, gathering around protusions such as studs bolts raised detail.

They also dry with a matt finish.

I trialed all of them over a white base (a Daughter of the Flame by PP) or over Pig Iron or Molten Bronze (both P3 paints) with no add ons or watering down.

Badab Black - Over the Pig Iron. The Detail was chain mail. Made a good job of darkening the metallic as well as increasing the shad. Looks near dry brushed. Excess wash did not run at all and merely blobbed over the detail slightlly darkening the metal ringlets of the chainmail. A quick touch up would fix this.

Gryphone sepia - Over the Molten Bronze . Armour chest plate. Great finish. Took the shine right out of the metallic. people familiar with Vallejo Smoke will love this wash. No guessing and wastage by having to mix to get the right consistancy. Painted straight on and the majority of the pigment settled in right nicely. The metal became aged and dull....

Devlan Mud - Over white. hair. I wanted to see how well the wash went over a large 3D surface and against gravity - PAssed. Desipte the figure standing up naturally the wash did not flow down the back of the miniature and to the feet! It was drawn into the base of the hair detail while leaveing the extreme hair shape still fairly white (some small colour change ). It rested in the crevases nice and stayed dark.

Leviathon Purple - Over White. Large cloth surface area with fold. More of the concern I had was about surface coverage. nothingn worse than painting a cloak with an ink/wash/glaze and having it pool up in the centre. Well it didn't. It flowed across the surface evenly (about 80-90% even) over the larger surface and still had enough to dwellin the clothes fold.

Asurmen Blue /Baal Red/Thraka Green - Over white. Over armour plate and other areas. All these came out the same. Excellant coverage and all Matt finish. All congregated around the raised detail and a thin coat over the flat panels. I didnt try these over their appropriate base coates but am looking forward to it. I dont think that the Baal Red over Mechrite Red (Foundation) is going to be the answer to all our hopes and dreams but I am going to check! Over Khador Red Base (P3) however should provide a nicely dulled down finish with natural shading - but time will tell.

Ogryn Flesh - Over white. Face. I was fairly unenthusiastic on this one. The pigment was not really dark enough over the white to impress me. It followed all the characteristics of the other washes though. I made sure the pot was mixed up. No difference no matter how much I used. I am definatley going to re-test this tonight over Khador Flesh and Midlund Flesh (P3 both) to see if there is a difference . I think people that are going to drop this on Dwarf Flesh are going to be a tad dissappointed... more playing required!!


Comparisson - To make sure there hadn't been some mystical alignment of the stars and blessing by the Chaos Gods, I tried the old inks over the same figure. The old GW inks pooled on flat surface and ran down the legs as normal , leaving a terrible glossy finish and the P3 inks worked beautiful as before (sorry, they are tops!) Strong colour, good coverage , but thinner and thus more prone to running.

In Conclusion - Definately worth the $33 fort he box set of eight (considering they will retail at $5 , its a nice savings). The Gryphonne Sepia will have a permanent place on my paints rack. Another thing I forgot to mention above was the lack of pooling was also accompanied by a lack of particles (in comparison to Smoke). These tests being over while I am going to have a better look against more commonly painted figures tonight (blue over Ultramarines Blue, Red over Blood Red, Green over Goblin Green and Mud over Bestial Brown).....

Nice going there.

They really are the eve of a new evolution in painting. With the aid of the spraygun (or any other airbrush) painting times will be cut right down!
