so it seems like I did this just a little while ago but here goes:
my name is as my username is. Unusual.
I'm the guy standing in the corner who pretty much always looks like I can't be bothered playing because I'm too lazy to choose an army and deploy it. This is usually an appearance based on fact, so I may need some inducements inorder to commit to a game. That said I am usually quite content to hang about and watch other armies play, I don't spend much time on the hobby these days so i like to see what is new by seeing what other people have when they play. I find simple head to head battles a little unispiring, and do so much love to play a game with some strategy and tactics required. This is something GW games are capable of, but so often ignored- perhaps because there are somany newbs playing in most places.
Mates got me into bloodbowl circa 1997 when I was at uni, and we played alot, once a week for many a year. That eventually led to 40k, and 6th edition fantasy, occasional CCGs and occasional forays into Mordheim, Necromunda and alike.
I also have another bunch of gaming buds who love historical gaming, WW2, deepest africa, sci fi all sorts of rulesets and scales.
I like the hobby side of the hobby as much as the gaming part of the hobby. Everytime an unpainted miniature sets foot upon a gaming table bile rises to the back of my throat and a god kills a baby duckling.
My pet peeves include people who game just to win, especially if they pevert the spirit if the game just to win, e.g. loading an independant character with every add on known, e.g. taking an army because it has an uber strong special rule. Usually the most I'll ever play a person like this is once, because after the first time realisation dawns that the army has been made to be unbeatable (usually through silly special 'oneoff' rules that GW put in each army) and it just takes the fun out of playing them for me.
On the other hand I love to play someone with a well designed army, something with some character, (rather than characters!), a theme, style or direction. I think this sort of approach brings so much to the hobby and makes the games more fun. Only so many times you can play against nothing but wraithguard & wraithlords before you start to say 'what's the point?'
To anyone who doens't judge their manlyness by winning or loosing is ok in my books, someone who is brave enough to assemble a halfling team for bloodbowl should be praised!
I have some 40k armies, and despite its many flaws I do like to play a game of 40k from time to time, especially if it is a mission battle (you know objectives etc).
I have an old 'nid army that I never use because it is in various stages of evolution (litterally, I mutated them in 3rd gen and these not suited to the current codex AFAIK)
the ubiquitous marine army that everyone has, it has 6 units of 5 tactical marines, mostly with a multimelta per squad, a land raider for the HQ boys, a couple of predators with lascannon goodness, a couple of nice new dreadnaughts that have not yet seen play, a squad of veterans who generally hang out with the chaplain in HTH. A Captain with a command squad and a librarian who is also yet to see action. ANd a speeder thingo too.
The Eldar you've seen, nice nad mobile, but under the current rules they skimmers do hit the ground pretty hard with surprising frequency, if 1000 points of them face a baneblade, 2 lemon russ a few chimeras, a demon nad a bomber they'll only last about 3 or 4 turns before needing some help. This army is noteworthy because its the first one I started after actually getting some decent painting skills, the warlocks and farseers are fun and easy to paint and some of my best work sofar.
At some point I picked up a handful of sisters, 3 battle chicks, and 5 seraphim, but other than throwing a little paint on them I've never done anything with them
For a few years I've been working on a new IG army, of plastic cadian infantry with lots of mortars and autocannons for fighting the squishy armies, they haven't seen action yet as I don't have enough points or enough assembled and painted. Work in progress.
In fantasy I have some undead, mostly zombies and ghosts and such, with a couple of vampires who lead them to war if they're not too busy playing bloodbowl. Could always do with more zombies, so next time you're strolling through the graveyard do me a favour and pick some up for me.
A long project I had for a while was a plastic infantry empire army, where I think abtou 120 of the 200 miniatures where converted, quite a challenge. The painjob on these didn't work like I planned, I tried a new method and they look a little chalkie. There are 30 swordsmen, 30 spearment, 30 halberiers, 30 freecompanymen, 20 archers, 20 crossbows, 20 handgunners (that's 180 miniatures in CORE choice, and 20 greatswords, who are the bodyguard for the elector count. This army is not fun to pack, deploy or use (they go squish) but they look impressive arrayed across the table int heir livery with standards blowing.
Typically I find fantasy to be a bit limited and boring, but am happy to play a game for a change from time to time.
Of all games ever made my favourite is bloodbowl, as mentioned elsewhere and I have highelves, woodelves, humans, skaven, more human, chaos, halflings, undead/vampire and soon some darkelves.
I've made lots of custom pitches int he past, all nicely flocked with dead body parts strewn across the pitch. You don't need to buy the box to play BB, just download and print the rules, convert, mail order or proxy some miniatures and you're good to go.
I'm scientist of the greenie tree-hugging type by profession- not that I'm all that professional. I run my own ecological consultancy, which to date has earned me the princely sum of about $280 total, so it is not exactly off the ground yet. i do a little contract work from time to time, ecological research or helping with environmental management plans, but most of the tiem I jsut sit at home playing on the internet deluding myself that I'm making progress on finishing my PhD, whcih I started in 2001.
Other interests include beer, which I brew from whole grains, hops, water with aid of yeast- you can too (ask me how). this is my most supported hobby and I've recently equiped my walk in pantry with a fridge with 4x 20L kegs for delicious frosty beer.
I'm a gridiron fan, whcih is what got me into bloodbowl in the first place, and I also play a great play-by-email gridiron simulation called Gameplan. (if you like the NFL then ask me about it sometime, or I'll send you a link).
Well that's enough of an introduction, if you want to know anything else you can go ahead and ask me!
