I have been pondering as to whether or not to hold a large tournament here in renmark. I have been encouraged by numerous sources both in town and interstate to go ahead and do it but am thinking if it is viable.
The last few Shippycons failed to break even and its this fact that has me wondering....
Do I bite the bullet invest the $500-600 dollars in order to run a large undertaking? The costs are high due to the fact that a venue will need to be hired (hotel probably)
What do you guys think? Which games supported? (40k obviously but try for fantasy aswell)
Its definately not outside of my abilities to pull off just wondering about the local support here....

ash you know that you would get just about all of the local guy to play except maybe one or two, no biggy, the only thing to worry bout is the non-local player interest! You would have to get exact number that are not gonna pull out at the last minute,
so there is prob' what 17 locals and if you're lucky you could get anything between another 15-30 players from else where. So ultimately the risk should be determanded by you getting a exact number of people, cost of venues, prizes and then weigh them against one another to see if it's worth gamble.

I have no doubts that the locals will get involved its just the fact of the prizes being trophy based and not miniatures based that will make it not so popular for out of towners...
Maybe the major ones can have miniatures prize support?

Hmm i think the minitures idea is good, but you'd wanna make it something special. Maybe just a forgeworld voucher or something?

hmmm... maybe rather than a regular tournament I could organise a theme weekend, one system, mini campaign but other things running along side to the theme/genre of the system but not strictly wargaming?
Yoiu know for fantasy have the games but also organise a full on medievel feast for the saturday evening etc?

Yeah sounds awsome!! See if theres an SCA nearyby you can get in touch with if you do that, they do all the medieval re-enactments so they should have some tips on setting up the feast.
