Ganked from Seer:
Hey folks!
Just got back from LA Gamesday. It was, of course, a good time to be had by all. I thought the 40K Big Game was a little weak this year, but there were some very good club tables and the Golden Daemon entries were top-notch.
The seminars didn't really break any new ground on the rumors front with a few exceptions:
- Phil Kelly confirmed he is working on Planetstrike, but he does not have any confirmations for the timeline
- The Valkyrie is (supposedly) still a possibility, but not definite. Phil said there are no technical problems with doing it, due to the scanning technology they now have, but there is a question of whether it would be worth putting into production.
- A 40K scenario book is being considered by GW. There's been thought about releasing a compendium of additional missions and possibly some campaign materal, but no work has yet begun.
HOWEVER, by far the biggest rumor came from the Black Library presentation. An audience member asked if BL had ever considered doing any screen-plays, shorts, etc. The presenter had a long pause, then replied with something to the effect of "Well, hypothetically, there could maybe be a direct to DVD release of some kind of CGI movie with Ultramarines next year. Maybe." The long and short of it was there is clearly some kind of direct to DVD, CGI 40K movie that is in progress, though the presenter placed massive stress on the fact that it was still not a sure thing and that he could not promise the release date, much less the fact that it would actually be completed (as reflected by anyone that remembers Exile Films' with Bloodquest).
It should be noted that the presenter also said that neither THQ nor the company that did the cutscenes for Dawn of War are involved, but that the movie would be "to that level of quality."
Back to me now:
Weeeellllllll..... What do you guys think of that lot?
The first piece of news is rather old. Codex Planet Strike has been talked about for a while now and although official statements are few and far between (even the reps really don't know about this, if its for final release, till near completion) its good to see this piece of news.
As for the contents of planet strike?
Rumour mill has it will contain rules for flyers in the regular 40K game (not Apoc) though will be similar just conatining the smaller stuff. Defence batteries and gun platforms and a full campaign system for detailing of all things the invasion of a planet from initial landings to full occupation.
News about the Valkyrie... Nothing new there. Been in the rumour mill for ages.
40K Scenario book is really really needed. How bored are you guys of playing the same mission over and over again?
Although its easy to make your own (or port them from previous eds) it will be good to have something official that you can just turn up for the game and roll it up!
But the biggy by far is the Movie news...
Although this has been around for ages and speculated about and been tried before (Bloodquest based on the monthly comic) this is really the first time it has been announced at a seminar to the public. The previous Bloodquest thing was almost at a fan based level (although it was being made by exile)
Maybe some of you guys have been around long enough to see the old footage they produced for that movie?
Orc Dreadnaught, The imperial Ships duking it out with some other unclassified ships in orbit of a planet (looked absolutely awesome back in the day) and the Landraider!
I have always been a fan of the idea of 40K movies. A group of German fans started making their own but due to 'problems' did not get it past the trailer stage (they produced this first in order to wet our appetites) it did look good. Look up Exterminatus Movie and maybe its still online.
Now if you are really lucky you can get hold of a VHS copy of a very old Black Library artifact. I can not remember its name but they used to play it at games days and Grand Opening sales. It had all sorts of different footage on it from live Space Hulk feeds to Necromunda Gangs duking it out in some underhive. I have seen it go on E-bay for $200. Its probably about 10-15 yrs old (I remember seeing it at the first Adelaide City stores Grand Opening)
Anyways what do you guys make of all of this?
