Last Saturday to help celebrate the new management of the store the Dice and Deck held its second massive Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse Battle!
Everyone and anyone was invited to bring along a Warhammer 40,000 army to a 3000pts limit. Apocalypse rules were used meaning there were some interesting team ups of miniatures through the armies present but this really added to the fun!
The game was played on a massive 24ft by 4ft board which went from a baked desert complete with rock pillars and a small oasis, through an imperial ruined city sector (featuring the very nice GW city ruins and barricades) and finished off with a green valley with rolling foothills and a few small clumps of trees.
The rules were simple.
There were 6 objectives on the table (2 in each 8foot length) and it was the occupation of these that determined the winners. Anything could control and contest an objective besides flyer's, monstrous creatures or super heavy vehicles/walkers.
We had no real idea how many people would show up but as the time of starting inched closer it was clear that this would be a BIG game.
At 11am the teams were decided and they were as follows:
The Side of Good!
Thyler M with his own custom marine chapter with Ravenwing Reinforcements.
Stanley G sporting an impressively low model count Imperial Guard army. Still managed to contain 3000pts with the aide of a Baneblade and several other choice tanks.
Scott Norris and his Space Wolves. Another small model count army but packing a really solid core of famous chapter characters.
Steve S and the Green Skin Horde! Many Kans, Trukks, Boyz and a few Shokk Attak Guns. Oh and not to forget the Lads in their Rokk chucking down meteors!
Daniel S and a veritable shed load of Armour including 3 Basilisks, 3 Hellhounds, 2 Russ's and a Baneblade!
Alex C (as a late reinforcement) with plenty of marines featuring a large number of Melita weaponry.
The Side of EVIL!
Mouse took a nice selection of Khorne Chaos Marines featuring the most devout of bloody followers; Beserkers and a massive Forge World Greater Daemon of Khorne!
Kruger and a host of elite Chaos Space Marines featuring a Baneblade, Warhound Titan and a very impressive scratch built Brass Scorpion!
Justin Goon?, A electic mix of Chaos Space marines with a nice balance of core foot troops, elites and armour.
Ben S.... 18 models... 285 point Carnifexes, a winged Hive Tyrant (affectionately known as Joey Joe Joe) a Barbed Heirodule (Barbara), Eldar Avatar, 2 Wraith lords and a few Wave Serpents...
Meg-anne H, Nurgle Chaos Marines including a Nurgle Baneblade, Dreadnoughts and a large detachment of Fallen Dark angels.
Scott B (late reinforcement) Chaos Salamanders? Yes, thats right, CHAOS SALAMANDERS!
Each side went on to choose some Strategic Assets and bid for set up time allowance. The side of evil won with a bid of just 5 minutes and hastily began to set up.
Once the forces of evil had set up they had a good laugh as they announced one of them had taken the Jammers asset and the side of good had 11 minutes to deploy in total silence.
Once deployment was complete Chaos made their first move. Now I would love to give a blow by blow account of the entire game but I will instead just give the highlights and let the players share their favorite and most hated moments.
Highlights:
The very first dice roll of the game was a 1. This was rolled by mouse and would continue as a trend for him as he is completely dismantled by Orcs and masses of Imperial Armour!
Kruger employing an opportune Chaos Terminator Deep Strike to wreck havok on the Ork and Imperial Battle lines on the far reaches of the Desert Boards only to suffer some sort of error and mis landing amongst a forest over 23 FEET AWAY!
Ben Shippy S suffering only one permanent casualty, a Tyranid Carnifex who was flattened by an Ork propelled Meteor!
His other Casualty being a winged Hive Tyrant who was returned due to tactful use of a Strategic Asset and went on to claim an objective (but contested by a rather pesky Space Wolves Rhino. It was most definitely the little Rhino that could!)
A Barbed Heirodule soaking up every thing thrown at it to smash its way through a Baneblade, several other imperial vehicles to claim a objective in total big monster action!
Kruger losing a second unit of Chaos Terminators to another Deep Striking Mishap, this time off the board!
There were many other memorable moments and I will let the other guys tell these but there were apocalyptic templates thrown around the table like crazy.
But in the end there could only be one victor and that went to the side of Good who won by a single objective point!
I really had a lot of fun running this event and I know the players really enjoyed the absolute mayhem that was a 32000pt battle played over 9 hours and enjoyed by 12 people.
This will be happening again in late February and it will be bigger and a whole lot more bad ass!
Below are a few pics of the event (more to come soon)
Looking at this line up of armour its no wonder Mouse's Khorne only lasted 3/4 turns!
The first dice roll of the game!
A sneaky assassin lines up a chaos Daemon Prince....
Stanleys Bane Blade comes under fire from Krugers Warhound Titan!
A mob of right dodgy lookin blokes...
Thats 5 Killer Kans and an Orc Trukk under there!
Arr'gan'ath explodes onto the table!!!!
Barbara Wins!
Joey Joe Joe holds a vital objective
Barbara and a small host of chaos holds another....
The participants of The Dice and Decks November 36000pt Apocalypse Game!
Left to Right: Thyler M (gaara), Justin ? (Goonthelord), Scott B, Daniel S (Simpson), Alex C (alex), Meg-anne H (calicojack), Mouse (madnessinc), Kruger, Ben S, Scott N (majordodo), Steve S (draconis), Stanley G (battlewearypriest)
A few facts and figures about November 08 Apocalypse:
The most traveled figure was a unit of Chaos Terminators commanded by Kruger who traveled a total of 23 feet due to a deep striking mishap. Even though they mis landed terribly they went on to contest a Good Side held objective.
The player who was removed quickest from the board was Mouse who lasted about 3 turns under a horrific amount of Imperial Armour Fire and Mass amounts of Greenskins.
Alex is doing a great job on his movember moustache.
The unit that caused the most damage to the enemy was a Chaos Warhound Titan commanded by Kruger.
The largest Damage Soak was Barbara the Barbed Heirodule. This thing came under such a devastatingly barrage of fire and still went on to total a Baneblade and several other tanks and hold an objective.
Ben S only lost one model permanently over the entire battle.
If you stay awake for three days straight apparently your fingers start to look really tasty.
Steve S four armed Ork Dreadnought for the very first time in its existence made it into contact with the enemy and do damage.
Over half of the miniatures on the table were very well painted and this is an achievement.
There was no breaks for the entirety of the battle. These wargaming legends battled it out for nine hours straight.
There was no Drop Podding Gandalf....
