Mission: Fighting withdrawal (Approximate 1050pt forces)
Location: North Africa, 1942 (mid war)
Attacker: (Draconis) German mixed company (mechanised infantry/tank)
Orders: To exploit an earlier victory you must smash the enemy rearguard and turn their retreat into a rout. Break through the enemy line and capture one of the objectives before it's too late!
Defender: (FOWnut) Australian infantry company
Orders: You must cover your withdrawal as the army falls back to the next defensible position and regroups. The enemy is moving around your flanks so you cannot stay too long. Hold the objectives long enough for the rest of the army to get clear.
The battlefield is set:
Draconis (on the left...wearing the dark blue shirt with the cunning 'white horizontal line' camo scheme) looks irritated...
The objectives are a building full of intelligence reports, and a fuel dump. Both must be protected from the enemy!
Recon units have moved forward:
A deep rumbling in the distance signifies the impending arrival of a large group of Panzers!
After turn one:
One universal carrier has been destroyed, but the German scout cars have been successfully despatched, with just a single passenger team surviving. The mechanised infantry have moved in, making a beeline directly for the building:
The rumbling draws ever nearer...
The 6 pounder anti-tank platoon is eager to welcome the Panzers, after destroying a halftrack:
A couple of developments during turn two:
Terror is a great motivator...even though these diggers look cool, calm & collected on the outside, they are actually very, very motivated right now!
A slight misjudgement on the part of the recce platoon could spell disaster for them:
At the end of turn two:
The carriers successfully avoided taking any hits and furthermore managed to temporarily chase off the enemy halftracks, thus delaying their arrival at the objective. Three of the anti-tank guns have been destroyed, but have themselevs destroyed no less than three panzer IV F1's (one of which was the 2ic unit), and bailed the HQ tank. The final gun was turned into scrap steel shortly after. Two of the Vickers HMG teams have now been blown to pieces by the panzers.
The Honey Sturts arrived in ambush and successfully bounced nine rounds off the side armour of one panzer inflicting absolutely no damage whatsoever...it's crew probably wondering who was knocking!!!
One Stuart was immediately despatched, leaving the other two racing to try to flank the enemy.
Meanwhile, the halftracks were on the move again...
End of turn five:
The remaining Stuarts were quickly decommissioned by the panzers
End of turn six:
One objective (the ammo dump) has been withdrawn, along with the universal carrier platoon. The German infantry are quickly closing with the dug in Australians.
End of the game:
After a very bloody assault lasting several rounds the Aussie diggers won with one remaining rifle/mg team, plus the company command team, but failed the motivation test therefore giving a 'stunning victory' (having lost no platoons) to the Germans. Although the Germans lost quite a few teams, not a single platoon was lost). Bloody great effort.
Great game, draconis!
