This is aimed more towards folks who may lurk, or happen across this site by accident, with a bit of an intrest in gaming, rather than you seasoned veterans out there...
When I first got into gaming, and then later rediscovered it with Two Hour Wargames, it was all too easy to read some battle reports, look at awesome terrain, Brilliantly painted minis, huge armies and get a little dejected thinking "I'll never have the money for armies like that, or the skill to make terrain like that".
Well, I can tell you for a fact that gaming DOESN'T NEED lots of money, or skill for armies, terrain, painting etc. Everyone enjoys a different aspect of the hobby. Some love making terrain, and make terrain even though they don't play games. Same with minis, some people paint 'em up beautifully and never play with them. Some people spend thousands of dollars on armies to play because they love the range of minis available. This isn't a bad thing, if that's what you like about the hobby, GREAT, DO IT!
If you're interested though, and think that you can't get in because of the cost, or the painting or the like, relax... In this section I'll slowly post links to paper minis, and some cheap or free rules. Grab the rules, print some paper minis, laminate if you can, and, to nick Ed's catchphrase from Two Hour Wargames, "JUST PLAY THE GAME!"
I Can promise you that you can have just as much fun on the loungeroom floor, using paper minis, and stacks of videos, DVDs, CDs and matchbox cars as scenery, as what anyone else does with massive armies of painted minis. It's about the game, and having fun, not about how well you can paint, how you build terrain, or how many minis you have.
In the end, the aim of wargaming is, as with any other hobby, to enjoy the hobby. Do whatever you need to in order to get that enjoyment, but keep in mind, it doesn't have to cost a lot of money!
