I rescued a magnetic whiteboard from work that was being thrown out because someone had ruled a grid over it with permanent marker, and noone could be bothered cleaning it. Lucky me!
A half hour and a half bottle of aftershave later (Hey, it's the only alcohol I could find that I was willing to waste on a whiteboard) and I had a shiny new whiteboard, and the best smelling garage in town.
I Use centimetre measurements instead of inches, which gives me the equivelant of a 7' x 7' table, with room for notes at the side. Only played a handful of games so far, but generally I rule it off to 4x4, as in the pics.
For now I'm using pins with the pin part removed, glued to thin
magnet. I'd really love to get hold of some pendraken minis (www.pendraken.co.uk/) to use instead, and build some itty bitty terrain pieces with magnets (www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13517) on the bottom.
Advantages - Compact, can draw on any terrain you feel like using, can be moved or bumped during a game without sending terrain and minis everywhere
Cons - Not really portable as the whiteboard is largish and weighty. For me it was cheap, as I rescued the whiteboard, but I think you'll find the're worth in excess of $100 (australian) to buy. Not as pretty as minis and terrain.
Hey, it works for me :-)
Square at bottom left is 48cm x 48cm, equivelant of 4x4.
Game in progress. The red ones are Zombies == bad... And this is the START of the game....
Plenty of room to scrawl notes on the side when you encounter other forces
Kids need to eat lunch? No problem! Continue when the're done.
