Well I know its a bit early to be talking about my next project as I'm still in need of finishing the last two pieces of cityfight terrain. That terrain is almost complete and all that is needed is a few small things.
But as I am the type of guy whose mind wont stop wondering about what I'm going to do next I thought I would let you in on my musings. The next piece of terrain will be a fortress. It will be generic allowing it to be fielded in any 25mm setting. Might even get away with it being used for other scales aswell...
The first thing I do is when I start a project is get it all in my head. My head is the most reliable place for me to store ideas (and thats saying something about my ability to lose hardcopy mediums!) I'll generally get the overall design in my head first then commit it to paper.
For the design the fortress will be broken down into four key parts: Walls, Towers, Gatehouse and Keep. Here is how each part will work:
Walls: These will be in 12 inch sections. There will be atleast 9 constructed allowing for a basic box to be created when put together with the other elements. I could have kept to a smaller number, say 3, but that would only allow a very small keep and since the keep needs to be spectacular (well it is what the walls are protecting) the walls need to be long ennough to accomodate it.
Towers: I am in two minds about what to do here. Either make a generic square tower that can be used for any system or make towers in two models; one for fantasy and the other for 40k. When one set is being used the other can be put on other tables as watch towers etc.. The towers will have sides of about 6 inches at the base and flare out at the top. If I do go generic there will be add on gun turrets etc to give them a futuristic flavor when used in that genre.
Gatehouse: Will be 12 inch in length. Have a door. Thats about all really.. Possibly be flanked by smaller guard towers?
Keep: The Keep will be constructed last. Once all the other elements are complete and usable then construction will commence. It will be tall and multi tiered. Think Minas Tirith but much much smaller. It will possibly have removable top and levels for some exciting internal games.
As for general construction?
Well I do have plenty of foam core which could serve as a good basis for boxing out the structure but im probably going to go with box cardboard (the sandwiched corrugated kind) This will make it more financially efficient and allow the foamcore to be used for detailing (buttresses and the like).
It will be simple box construction to allow for easy detailing and box shapes will be easier to complete. Later on down the track some angled wall sections can be added to make more interesting shapes.
Well thats my musings for now. Let me know what you think, your ideas and any other comments!
